About Silver Thread Winery

Silver Thread is a boutique Finger Lakes winery producing outstanding Riesling and other cool-climate wines from sustainably grown grapes on the eastern shore of Seneca Lake. Established in 1982 and owned since 2011 by acclaimed winemaker Paul Brock and wine educator Shannon Brock, the winery practices a holistic, regenerative style of farming called biointensive viticulture, and its winery generates 100% of its energy needs from a 28kw on-site solar array. Production does not exceed 3,000 cases per year, and all wines are vegan with minimal sulfites.

In 2025, Silver Thread opened the Winegarden, a new tasting location on Route 414 (in the former Dano's Heuriger building) offering wine and food pairings with a big view of Seneca Lake and the vineyards. Guided tastings of five wines are led by knowledgeable Wine Educators, and an in-house chef prepares small bites — curated cheese boards, salads, sausages, and European-style spreads — from local Finger Lakes ingredients. The original Estate Tasting Room, perched in the middle of the vineyard ¾ mile off the wine trail on Caywood Road, is open seasonally by appointment for estate, library, and limited-production tastings plus vineyard tours.

The winery is named for Silver Thread Falls, a hidden local waterfall known as one of the loveliest in the Finger Lakes. The turtle on the label comes from a centuries-old Haudenosaunee rock carving, an earth symbol reminding the winery to care for the land and water. Since its first release in 1991, Silver Thread's Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir have earned acclaim in Wine Advocate, The New York Times, and The World Atlas of Wine.
